Drought Conditions
- US Drought Monitor - A map released every Thursday showing where drought is and how bad it is across the United States and its territories.
- Upper Missouri River Basin (UMRB) Drought Indicators Dashboard - An interactive geographic dashboard that allows users to visually compare a variety of drought metrics across the entire state.
- Montana Mesonet - The Montana Mesonet Dashboard provides access to local weather conditions across the state through its network of Mesonet stations. A wide range of weather information is offered for each station, including soil moisture.
- Long Term Weather and Drought Forecast - The NWS’ Climate Prediction Center provides real-time products and information that predict and describe climate variations on timescales from weeks to years, and promote effective management of climate risk and resilience
Streamflow
- USGS WaterWatch (Montana) - WaterWatch is a site developed by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) that displays maps, graphs, and tables describing real-time, recent, and past streamflow conditions for United States.
- Montana Stream & Gage Explorer (StAGE) - A geographic explorer that provides accurate, high-quality 'real time' surface water streamflow data in Montana rivers and streams that are not monitored by the USGS.
- Montana River Conditions Tool - A tool that provides easy-to-access real-time data to support watershed groups in their drought management and resource conservation activities. Real-time data include USGS stream gage discharge and temperature data, and Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife, and Parks (FWP) stream restrictions and closures.
Reservoir Storage
- State Water Projects - The Montana DNRC's State Water Projects Bureau (SWPB) administers the operation, maintenance, management, and rehabilitation of state-owned water projects, and assists in the operation and maintenance of nine dams owned by Montana FWP.
- Federal Water Projects
- Bureau of Reclamation – Montana Lakes - Reservoir storage, recreation, precipitation, and operational information for Montana lakes operated and managed by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation (BOR).
- Bureau Of Reclamation – Columbia River Basin - Provisional and historical Hydromet data for thecHungry Horse Reservoir. Hydromet is a data collection and distribution system that supports BOR water project operations, management, and supply forecasting for BOR reservoirs in the Columbia and Snake River Basins. Environmental data and conditions monitored by the Hydromet network include reservoir water levels, gate positions, temperatures, precipitation, water and barometric pressure, dissolved gas content, solar radiation, evaporation, and wind speed and direction.
- USACE - Fort Peck Dam - Information on the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' (USACE) management of Fort Peck Dam in Northeastern Montana. This dam is the furthest upstream of six dam and reservoir projects built on the mainstem of the Missouri River.
Snowpack
- National Water and Climate Center - A map that shows current snow water equivalent (SWE), precipitation, and streamflow conditions for the western U.S. Map data and the map itself are managed by the USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) National Water and Climate Center.
Weather Forecasting & Climate Information
- NWS & NOAA Weather & Hazards Data Viewer - An interactive map showing current weather data, hazards, warnings, and forecasts.
- Climate at a Glance - NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) provides global-scale temperature information data and real-time analyses of monthly and annual temperatures on a global scale and is intended for the study of climate variability and change. The interactive mapping tool allows for analysis of spatial patterns of global temperature anomalies and regional temperature analysis.
- High Plains Regional Climate Center CLIMOD - A user friendly interface that allows quick access to temperature, precipitation, and snowfall data, analysis performance, and the creation of temperature and precipitation graphs.
- Weather Prediction Center - The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) National Weather Service (NWS) Weather Prediction Center (WPC) synthesizes the nation’s daily weather and upholds the operational prediction of rainstorms, winter storms, and extreme temperature events.
Montana
- Montana Climate Office - The Climate Office hosts the Drought Dashboard, Montana Mesonet, and the Seasonal Climate Outlook. These tools record current climate trends in precipitations, temperature, soils conditions and more.
- MSU Extension - Montana-specific drought resources for homeowners and producers including gardening, disaster planning, mental health, and cropland drought information.
National
- National Drought Mitigation Center (NDMC) - The Center works to build drought resilience through its research on the science of drought monitoring and the practice of drought planning. It provides research publications, educational materials, and other information about drought.
- Drought.Gov – NIDIS - NIDIS is a multi-agency partnership that coordinates drought monitoring, forecasting, planning, and information at national, state, and local levels. Users can access multiple data sources for drought and drought impacts, as well as learn about funding opportunities and monthly Drought & Climate Outlook Webinars.
- National Center for Environmental Information – Drought - NCEI provides environmental data and tools for decision-makers impacted by weather and climate, including extensive weather and climate data, measurement, and modeling.
Montana Drought Impacts Reporter - The Montana Drought Impacts Reporter allows users to view on-the-ground reports of drought impacts and submit their own observations. Information is incorporated into the weekly drought monitoring process, and it helps inform responses in times of drought.
Montana Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB) Reporting Tool - HABs are an overgrowth of cyanobacteria that can produce toxins posing serious health risks to humans and animals. Drought conditions like high temperatures and low water levels can promote growth cyanobacteria growth on lakes and reservoirs. DEQ has a tool for members of the public to report and track HABs.
Montana Watershed Coordination Council (MWCC) - MWCC is a statewide nonprofit organization whose mission is to unite and support Montana’s community-based conservation networks to promote healthy and productive watersheds. Their website contains a wealth of resources for new and established watershed groups and partners, including a directory of watershed organizations and a searchable watershed resource library.
Montana Association of Conservation Districts (MACD) - MACD is a nonprofit organization representing and supporting Montana’s conservation districts through advocacy, programs, and partnership building. Montana’s 58 conservation districts are tasked with administering stream (310) permitting, and many are involved in watershed planning.

- Drought Preparedness Planning: Building Institutional Capacity (PDF), by Wilhite and others (2005) offers a thorough breakdown of the typical 10-Step drought planning process with lessons and guidance for all kinds of drought planning.
- Planning and Drought (PDF), published through a partnership between the American Planning Association, NDMC, and NIDIS, provides basic drought information for planners and seven detailed case studies of drought planning at different scales (cities, tribes, counties, states).
- Resilience Strategies for Drought (PDF) is a fact sheet produced by the Center for Climate and Energy Solutions that offers an overview of water conservation strategies, as well as a case study.
- Integrated Water Resources Planning and Management Guide for Montana Municipalities (PDF) contains steps and considerations for cities as they evaluate and prepare for future water demand.
- Water Wise: Strategies for Drought-Resilient Development presents the risks and impacts of drought with a business case for water-smart development. - DNRC Regional Water Planning Program - DNRC's Water Planning, Implementation, and Communications (PIC) Bureau's Water Planning Section assists communities in engaging stakeholders, outlining collaborative processes, developing water management plans, acquiring grant funding, identifying and prioritizing projects, and resolving water use conflicts. Regional Water Planners are available to assist in the Lower Missouri, Upper Missouri, Yellowstone, and Clark Fork/Kootenai River Basins.
Bureau of Reclamation WaterSMART Drought Response Program - The BOR’s Drought Response Program supports a proactive approach to drought by providing assistance to water managers to develop and update comprehensive drought plans and implement projects that will build long-term resiliency to drought.
Montana Farm Service Agency Office Directory - The Montana Farm Service Agency (FSA) Office assists Montana farmers and ranchers in securing the greatest possible benefit from programs administered by FSA such as farm loans, commodity price support, disaster relief, conservation, and other available resources.
U.S. Department of Agriculture Drought Assistance Portal - The USDA offers a suite of recovery, risk management, and resilience-building programs for agricultural operations impacted by drought.
Montana DNRC Grant & Loan Programs - The DNRC-administered Grant and Loan Programs include several types of grants that fund the conservation, management, development and preservation of Montana's renewable resources. The Reclamation and Development Grant Program offers funding for drought plans and projects under crucial state need. Other planning and project funding is available through the Renewable Resource Grant Program, the Watershed Management Grant Program, and Irrigation Development Grants.
Montana Farm & Ranch Stress Assistance Network (MFRSAN) - MFRSAN provides Montana agricultural producers with access to free, confidential counseling services, as well as grants for bringing mental health speakers, workshops, and new or expanded trainings focused on emotional, psychological, and social well-being to rural Montana.
Montana FWP Future Fisheries Grant Program - FWP's Future Fisheries Improvement Program funds projects that restore rivers, streams, and lakes to improve and restore Montana's wild fish habitats.
- Montana Forest Action Plan (2020) DNRC - This plan provides recommended goals and strategies to help promote cross-boundary, landscape scale forest restoration and management across Montana.
- Montana State Water Plan (2015) DNRC - The Plan addresses water management issues on a statewide basis, including 68 recommendations intended to guide state water policy and management over the near, intermediate and long-term bases.
- Multi-Hazard Mitigation Plan & Statewide Hazard Assessment (2023) MA-DES – This Assessment comprehensively addresses the primary hazards (e.g., fire, floods, drought, severe weather, etc.) and their associated risks and vulnerabilities across Montana. It is the state’s primary hazard mitigation document. The assessment profiles eleven natural and manmade hazards; including the mitigation strategies.
- State Wildlife Action Plan (2015) FWP - The SWAP identifies community types, Focal Areas, and species in Montana with significant issues that warrant conservation attention. The plan is not meant to be an FWP plan, but a plan to guide conservation throughout Montana.
- Statewide Fisheries Management Program and Guide (2019-2027) FWP - The guide describes the overarching, statewide goals and objectives for the core Fisheries Programs and areas of work within these programs, as well as special management issues, challenges, and initiatives within each program and guidance for addressing them.
- Nonpoint Source Management Plan (2017) DEQ - The plan has information about the sources of nonpoint source pollution and the effects on water quality, including identifying actions that citizens can take to reduce NPS pollution.
- Priceless Resources - A Strategic Framework for Wetland and Riparian Area Conservation and Restoration in Montana 2013-2017 DEQ - A five-year strategic framework that prioritizes and directs collective efforts on wetland and riparian area conservation and restoration.
- Montana Climate Assessment (2017) Montana Institute on Ecosystems - This assessment reports on climate trends and their consequences for three of Montana’s vital sectors: water, forests, and agriculture.
- Climate Change and Human Health (2021) Montana Institute on Ecosystems -This assessment presents Montana-specific information about the impacts of climate change on the health of Montanans and describes how Montana can best prepare for future challenges.
- Montana’s Resiliency Framework for Communities (2019) Commerce - Aframework for communities to identify, assess and adapt to social, economic, and ecological disruptions. It especially addresses risks associated with natural disasters such as wildfire, drought, flooding, and severe storms.
- Montana Climate Solutions Plan (2020) Montana Climate Solutions Council - The plan provides recommendations and strategies aimed at preparing Montanans for climate impacts and reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
- NIDIS Drought Assessment in a Changing Climate: Priority Actions & Research Needs - The report highlights priority actions and research questions across fifteen focus areas to improve drought assessment by addressing gaps identified by the research and practitioner community.
